What is "Sensory Play"?

Not just the latest buzzword to guilt-trip you about your parenting style, Sensory Play is based on science and draws on some age-old activities that encourage families to just get back to basics.

Sensory activities facilitate unstructured, accelerated learning by encouraging children to naturally explore and use scientific processes while they play, create and investigate by engaging with activities that are intended to stimulate all their senses: whether it be touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. Igniting these senses helps to build nerve connections in the brain’s neural pathways, enhancing a child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks, which supports cognitive growth, language development, gross motor skills, social interaction and problem-solving skills.

Technically all kinds of play should engage your child’s senses (even screen-based activities) so what’s the difference between these and “Sensory” Play?

Well, the most obvious difference for us is that sensory play is usually messier and more time-consuming, either in terms of preparation, length of engagement or if nothing else, clean up. But it can also be some of the most affordable (rewarding and enjoyable), with materials such as sand, mud, leaves – these natural resources are accessible to most.

Sounds like too much work? Well, it’s worth it… Why is sensory play so important? Click here to learn more about the benefits of sensory activities for children.
